Brought to you by CDA Vacation Rentals

Large Christmas light display with a gift box sculpture and illuminated tree at night

The best part of a Coeur d'Alene Christmas getaway might be the moment your boat pulls away from the dock. Downtown glows behind you, holiday displays brighten the shoreline, and the kids are waiting to hear Santa call their names at the North Pole.

Or it might happen afterward, over a shared dessert, a walk along Sherman Avenue, or hot cocoa back at your cottage.

The Coeur d'Alene Christmas lights are the centerpiece of the season, but there's enough around them to make a full weekend: a waterfront lighting celebration, North Pole cruises, outdoor ice skating, downtown shopping, and dinner overlooking the lake.

Here's how to enjoy the festivities, plan an evening that doesn't feel rushed, and choose where to stay when you're ready to make a weekend of it.

For the Coeur d'Alene Christmas lights, stay downtown if you want to walk to the resort, waterfront, and North Pole cruise check-in area. Riverstone offers restaurants and shopping with a short drive downtown, while homes beyond the downtown core provide quieter settings between holiday outings.

2026 Holiday Highlights

  • Lighting Ceremony: Friday, November 27, 2026, with the switch-on of the lights and a holiday fireworks display.

  • Standard North Pole cruise season: November 26, 2026, through January 3, 2027.

  • Standard cruise duration: approximately 40 minutes. Special Lighting Ceremony cruises run approximately 90 minutes.

  • Check-in location: inside the Resort Plaza Shops, 115 South Second Street. Do not go directly to the marina.

  • Recommended arrival: at least 30 minutes before departure, plus time for driving and parking.

  • Tickets and current schedule: official Journey to the North Pole cruise page.

2026 event dates checked October 16, 2026, against CDA Cruises and CDA on Ice.

What Is the Coeur d'Alene Holiday Light Show?

The Coeur d'Alene Resort's Holiday Light Show brings more than 1.5 million lights to the lakefront. Illuminated displays along the waterfront turn an evening downtown into a holiday outing, while seasonal cruises take guests onto Lake Coeur d'Alene for a different perspective.

There are several ways to enjoy the season. Visit for the opening Lighting Ceremony, reserve a Journey to the North Pole cruise, or spend an evening exploring downtown and enjoying the waterfront atmosphere.

The opening celebration and the standard North Pole cruises are different experiences, so choose your date and tickets around what you most want to do.

The 2026 Lighting Ceremony: An Opening-Night Celebration

The 2026 Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, November 27. The opening celebration brings the switch-on of the lights and a holiday fireworks display to the waterfront.

Special Lighting Ceremony cruises offer an on-the-water experience, combining a trip to the North Pole with views of the fireworks. These cruises are scheduled for approximately 90 minutes, rather than the standard 40-minute North Pole trip.

If opening night is your priority, give the evening plenty of breathing room. Arrive downtown early, enjoy the shops, and have a plan for dinner and parking before the waterfront gets busy.

You don't have to visit on opening night to enjoy a Christmas getaway in CDA. The seasonal cruise schedule continues into early January, giving you more dates to choose from.

Journey to the North Pole: The Holiday Cruise Families Come For

The Journey to the North Pole takes guests across the lake to visit Santa's waterfront North Pole setting. Along the way, you'll enjoy the holiday lights from the water, with a visit from Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their helpers as part of the experience.

For children, one of the highlights is hearing Santa announce their name from his Nice List. Follow the ticketing instructions for submitting children's names when arranging your visit.

Standard cruises are scheduled for November 26, 2026, through January 3, 2027, and last approximately 40 minutes. The operator lists departures at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 p.m., subject to availability and schedule changes.

An earlier departure can work well for younger children, leaving time for dinner and a relaxed bedtime afterward. A later cruise gives you room for an early meal and some downtown exploring first.

Where Do You Check In?

Check in inside the Resort Plaza Shops at 115 South Second Street. Don't head straight to the marina: guests check in inside, and the cruise team escorts them to the boats.

The operator recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before departure. Add time for driving, parking, and walking to check-in.

Will We Be Cold on the Boat?

The boats are heated and enclosed, so you have an indoor place to enjoy the experience. You'll still want warm coats, gloves, and shoes with good traction for walking downtown and getting to and from the boat.

Hot chocolate, holiday beverages, cookies, and other seasonal snacks are available for purchase aboard. Outside food and drinks are not permitted.

Check the official Journey to the North Pole cruise page for tickets, current departures, and boarding instructions.

More Holiday Things to Do in Downtown CDA

Skate at McEuen Park

An outdoor skating session at CDA on Ice is an easy way to add another holiday activity to your visit. The rink sits at McEuen Park near the downtown waterfront.

The announced 2026–2027 season runs November 6 through January 18. Reserve a session and check availability before arriving, since private events can affect public skating times.

If you're traveling with small children, consider skating one day and cruising the next. That leaves time for warm-up breaks and makes each outing feel like its own occasion.

Browse Sherman Avenue for Gifts and Treats

Give yourself time to explore downtown before your evening plans. Browse the boutiques, pick out a gift, and stop somewhere warm along the way.

Earlier in the day is the better time to visit the shops on your list, since individual business hours vary. It also means you can enjoy downtown without hurrying toward cruise check-in.

Stop for Hot Cocoa or a Seasonal Coffee

For a downtown coffee break, Vault Coffee at 324 Sherman Avenue serves lattes, chai, tea, seasonal drinks, and pastries. It's a convenient afternoon stop while exploring the shops.

If you're heading toward downtown along North Fourth Street, Anchored Coffee Company at Fourth and Birch, at 1103 North Fourth Street, lists hot chocolate on its menu.

Check current opening hours, particularly if you're planning an evening visit. Finish any takeaway drinks before boarding your cruise.

Plan a Holiday Date Night Overlooking the Lake

The Christmas lights make a lovely reason for a couple's getaway, too.

Beverly's and the Lakeview Lounge offer dinner and cocktails with panoramic lake views from the seventh floor of the Coeur d'Alene Resort. Make a reservation for a special meal, or check the lounge's current service details when planning drinks.

If you're also cruising, book your departure first and leave a comfortable gap around dinner. You want time to enjoy the view.

Share a Gooey Dessert at Dockside

For a sweet addition to a family outing, Dockside at the resort is known for its Gooey Desserts and lake views.

Plan dessert as its own stop or include it with dinner. After an evening of lights and Santa, sharing something sweet can be a fitting finish.

For a broader look at what the area has to offer year-round, see our guide to the best things to do in Coeur d'Alene.

How to Plan an Evening Without Rushing

Build your plans around one reserved activity, then leave room on either side.

For families with younger children, that might mean an afternoon downtown, an early cruise, and dinner afterward. For couples or friends, it could be an early dinner followed by a later departure.

If you're driving in, allow time to park once and enjoy the rest of the evening on foot where practical. Keep gloves and hats handy, and leave enough flexibility for a warm-up stop.

A two- or three-night North Idaho visit gives you room to spread things out. You can enjoy the cruise one evening, skate the next day, and still have time for a slow breakfast together.
